International Olympic Committee (IOC) member William Blick has urged parents to always play an active role in their children’s sports careers since it is currently the best-paying industry in the world.

Speaking during the Olympic week celebrations at Grand Maria School in Nabbing Wakiso district, Blick, a sports enthusiast who hails from a sports family, advised the parents to encourage their children to engage in sport from a young age.

“Taking the lead role in your child’s sports career will not only provide guidance but also leadership to the children from a young age on the perfect choices they have to make to succeed in life,” Blick advised.

“When a child excels in sports, he/she can merit a scholarship opportunity to attain education free of charge in exchange for the talent which comes to those that do the work relentlessly,”

Blick is a living testimony of a rugby University scholarship in England and also has his daughter Isabella Blick playing football at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Rubaga on a scholarship on top of representing Uganda internationally.

In commemoration of the Olympic week, students participated in various games including athletics, tug of war, and many others showing how athletic they were with their parents cheering on in support.

Cyrus Muwanga, the director of Grand Maria School (GMS) outlined the importance of having sports as a necessity in his school.

“I always ensure that I prioritize sports as a mandatory co-curricular activity for the children for it helps them concentrate more in class and be active as well as quick in decision making,” Muwanga noted.

The former national and African table tennis champion is proud of his sports history and believes sports is a solution to various challenges among youth, especially idleness.

“Having played table tennis becoming a national champion and representing my country at the university level enabled me to realize the adverse importance of sports which has always stuck into my mind and want to impart sports knowledge to the kids at a young age,” Muwanga noted.
