Volunteers take centre stage as Uganda prepares to co-host CHAN 2025

With only days left before Uganda co-hosts one of Africa’s biggest football showcases—the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN), excitement is building across the country.

At Lugogo Indoor Arena, hundreds of volunteers gathered for an official orientation, marking the beginning of their journey as ambassadors for the tournament.

The event united football administrators, legendary players, and officials, all echoing one powerful message: volunteers are the heartbeat of CHAN.

Justus Mugisha, Chairperson of the Workforce and Volunteers Committee, opened the session by acknowledging the vital role of volunteers. “This is your moment to serve, to shine, and to support the game we all love,” he said.

Former Uganda Olympic Committee president and current IOC member William Blick emphasized the value of service in sport: “Volunteering is service to country. When you help through sport, you leave an everlasting mark.”

He encouraged participants to bring smiles and energy, adding that their enthusiasm could boost national pride and elevate Uganda’s image globally.

“You’re not just helping run a tournament, you’re giving people a reason to see Uganda in a new light.”

Sports scientist David Katende called the experience a classroom without walls: “You’ll meet people from everywhere and learn things no school can teach. You’re the engine that drives this event.”

CAF Host Country Manager Serge Assume urged volunteers to make the most of the opportunity: “It may open doors beyond Uganda. Embrace the experience—challenges and all.”

FUFA CEO Edgar Watson reminded volunteers to be culturally sensitive: “What’s normal in your culture might not be in another. How you act and speak will shape how Uganda is remembered.”

CAF Safety and Security Officer Humphrey Mandu Watenga stressed unity and professionalism: “You are the face of this tournament. Success will depend on your teamwork and integrity.”

FUFA Third Vice President and presidential advisor Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi echoed the call for pride and purpose: “You represent Uganda, the president, the first lady, FUFA, and the local organising committee. Give it your best.”

CHAN 2025 marks a historic first: a tri-nation partnership between Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. The tournament kicks off August 2 in Dar es Salaam, followed by matches in Nairobi and Kampala, with Uganda hosting the third-place playoff. Nairobi will stage the final.

FUFA Projects Manager Sumaya Hood Kiwanuka confirmed that volunteers will support operations across media, communications, spectator services, marketing, and branding.

The eighth edition of CHAN spotlights locally based players, offering a continental stage to prove their mettle. For Uganda, the spotlight shines on the refurbished Nelson Mandela National Stadium, where the Cranes face Algeria, Niger, Guinea, and South Africa in Group C.

Final preparations across the region are nearly complete, from spruced-up stadiums and training grounds to volunteers primed for action.

CHAN officially kicks off on August 2, followed by two games in Nairobi on August 3. Uganda begins its campaign on August 4 against Algeria. The tournament runs until August 30, 2025.
