While most footballers are enjoying the off-season, Ugandan striker Steven Mukwala is doing something completely different.

Instead of taking a break, the prolific forward can be found ducking punches, throwing jabs, sprinting through agility drills, and sweating through intense boxing workouts under the watchful eye of renowned Kampala-based fitness trainer, Coach Clement Yiga.

This training partnership proves one thing, champions are built long before the first whistle of a new season.

Mukwala, who recently joined Al-Nasser SC (Al-Nasr Benghazi) in the Libyan Premier League from Tanzanian giants Simba SC, has quickly become an influential figure in his club's championship playoff campaign. Behind the goals and impressive performances lies a relentless commitment to physical preparation.

Coach Clement, a respected figure in Uganda's boxing and fitness circles, has designed a specialised programme that blends boxing fundamentals with football-specific conditioning.

The sessions aim to sharpen Mukwala's explosive power, improve his balance, enhance his footwork, boost his reaction speed, and strengthen his core—qualities every modern striker needs to stay ahead of defenders.

Watching the sessions is nothing short of captivating. One moment Mukwala is unleashing rapid-fire punches on the pads, and the next he is weaving through agility ladders before exploding into short sprints. Every movement is carefully crafted to mirror the demands of elite football.

"Football is no longer just about talent. It is about preparation, discipline, and staying one step ahead physically," Coach Clement often tells his athletes.

His famous mantra, "RESPECT ALL, FEAR NONE," has become more than just words. It is a philosophy that pushes athletes to remain humble while approaching every challenge with confidence and courage.

Training mostly around Kampala using outdoor circuits and specialised boxing routines, Coach Clement has earned a reputation for helping athletes maintain peak fitness during the off-season. His methods continue to attract professional footballers looking for that extra edge before returning to club duty.

For Mukwala, the hard work is already paying dividends. The striker is not only preparing to hit the ground running when the new Libyan season begins but is also keeping himself in prime condition for future assignments with the Uganda Cranes.

As football continues to evolve, cross-training has become an essential ingredient for elite athletes. Boxing, once viewed purely as a combat sport, is now helping footballers improve their stamina, coordination, agility, and mental toughness.

If these demanding sessions are anything to go by, Steven Mukwala will return to Libya fitter, stronger, and hungrier than ever. And with Coach Clement Yiga in his corner, one thing is certain—every punch thrown today could translate into another goal tomorrow.
