Injury rules Ugandan Chemusto out of 2023 World ChampsWith only a little over two weeks to the 2023 World Athletics Championships, Team Uganda has been dealt a huge blow with the withdrawal of Janat Chemusto due to injury.

She sustained an injury to her ankle and Achilles while in Poland during the Silesia Wanda Diamond League in mid-July.

"Yes, it is sad," senior coach Addy Ruiter confirmed the news.

He said it is difficult to tell when Chemusto would return to training, but he believes it will "heavily depend on how long she will be out".

Her withdrawal is a huge blow for Team Uganda, who are currently camped at Trinity Biblical Institute in Uganda's eastern district of Kapchorwa for specialized training ahead of the August 19-27 competition in Budapest, Hungary.

Chemusto had been listed alongside national record-holder Winnie Nanyondo to represent in the 1,500m category. Her exit now means Nanyondo will go at it all alone.

Chemusto suffered a similar injury last year at the World Islamic Solidarity Games in Turkey, where she won 5,000m bronze.

“It is a big challenge having such a talent then injuries surface at a wrong time altogether," said Team Uganda coach Benjamin Njia in the wake of the development.
