Idi Amin's grandson vows to become 'King of Scotland' at Commonwealth Games

Former Ugandan President Idi Amin's grandson, Abdul Aziz "Ringo" Hard, has declared his ambition to leave Glasgow as the new "King of Scotland" as he begins his quest for Commonwealth Games gold on Wednesday.
Ringo faces England's highly rated Damar Thomas at the Scottish Events Campus (SEC) Arena, determined to conquer Britain just like his grandpa Amin (RIP) once did.
The Kololo Boxing Club heavyweight and 2025 Africa Zone 3 Boxing Championships gold medalist believes victory over Thomas will be the first step toward fulfilling his dream of standing atop the Commonwealth podium while keeping his family's boxing legacy alive.
His grandfather, Idi Amin, was a renowned boxer during his youth days at Kyambogo College and won the Uganda National Open Boxing Championships light heavyweight title in the late 1950s before joining the military. His exploits in the ring remain a notable chapter in Uganda's boxing history.
The former Ugandan president is said to have once been brutally knocked out by legendary national boxing team, the Bombers, head coach Peter Sseruwagi (RIP) in 1958, before he orchestrated a rematch after becoming president, delivering a staged knockout to his former tormentor (Sseruwagi).
"I'm a man on a mission in Scotland. First of all, to become the new King of Scotland just like my grandpa did in his own way. My mission is to win gold and it starts today against Damar Thomas," Ringo told Vision Sport.
"I'm coming with the Ringo system that has knocked out many of my opponents. It is an aggressive style that my late grandfather always believed in to avoid bad officiation from judges."
But in Damar, Ringo faces one of the toughest boxers on Team Great Britain. The 21-year-old Briton, who stands at 6 ft 6 tall, is rated as the next big prospect in the country's heavyweight division.
Damar is not only a 2022 European Youth Boxing Championship silver medalist but also a 2024 World Boxing Championship quarter-finalist, making him a formidable obstacle in Ringo's pursuit of Commonwealth Games glory.
Victory for Ringo would not only secure his place in the medal bracket but would also put him on the table of Abdul Sabata, the last Ugandan heavyweight to win a Commonwealth Games medal when he bagged a bronze at the Auckland 1990 Games in Australia.
