"I have conquered amateur darts": Makanga ready for professional test

Uganda's top-seeded female darter, Sarah Makanga, is set to make her maiden professional test, with her sights firmly set on winning the sh12.5m prize money.

The two-time Africa champion will compete in all three categories on offer at the Africa Darts Council (ADC) Global Tournament, scheduled for July 25–26, 2026, at the Jacaranda Sports Club in Nakuru, Kenya.

"I have conquered the African continent in amateur darts, and now it is time for me to test the professional category," Makanga said.

"The professional category always has tough, experienced opponents, but that will not stop me from pursuing my dream. I have challenged myself against men and beaten them, so I am confident I will get good results," added Makanga, who also represents Bank of Uganda in national competitions.

The ADC tournament will feature the amateur category, the Northern Women series, and the Northern African Continental Tour, all taking place on the same weekend at the same venue.

Makanga noted that she will compete in all three events and expects stiff opposition from Kenya's top darters, including Millicent Wangui, Agnes Jerotich, Janet Sitienei, Rose Museo, and Selina Sakawa.

The three-time Uganda Open champion has also dominated amateur darts in East Africa and across the continent, which gives her added confidence heading into the professional ranks.

Other Ugandan darters expected to join Makanga include Patrick Ochieng and Juma Saidi, both of whom have won several previous editions of regional tournaments.

Uganda Darts Association president Abel Ariong has consistently urged Ugandan senior darters to step up to the professional level, paving the way for younger players in the amateur divisions.

"Professional darts is the way to go. There is money involved, and I am convinced that we have the talent to perform on the professional stage and win the cash prizes on offer," Ariong said.
