Lugazi FC, debutants in the Uganda Premier League, secured their first-ever win in the competition by defeating seven-time champions Express FC 1-0 at Hamza Stadium in Nakivubo on Tuesday.

The all-important goal was scored by forward Sam Ssemugugu in the 27th minute, marking a historic victory for the club.

Express dominated possession as expected but struggled to convert that dominance into clear-cut chances. Lugazi's defense remained resolute, successfully repelling the few attempts Express created.

Coming into this game, Lugazi had endured a difficult start to the season, losing three and drawing two of their first five league matches.

Following these results, the club made a managerial change, promoting assistant coach Oliver Mbekeka to the interim head coach position after parting ways with Sadiq Sempigi.

Mbekeka made history as the first female coach to lead a men's team in a Uganda Premier League match.

Reflecting on this milestone, Mbekeka expressed her joy, describing it as the greatest achievement of her career.

"I have accomplished a lot in football as a player, but this is by far the biggest. I have been praying for this moment, and God has finally granted it," Mbekeka said.

She also extended her gratitude to former head coach Sempigi, who had faith in her abilities, and to the club's proprietor, Abdu Kawuulu, for entrusting her with this role.

The victory lifted Lugazi FC off the bottom of the league table, moving them to 13th place with five points from six matches.

For Express FC, the defeat highlighted a lack of sharpness, particularly in decision-making.

Their defense was caught napping when Ssemugugu scored his unchallenged header, contributing to their first home defeat of the season and second overall.
