Gulu City is preparing to host the 2026 Uganda Health Training Institutions Sports Association (UHTISA) Games, scheduled to run from August 2 to 8, 2026, bringing together thousands of participants from health training institutions across the country.
The week-long competition will be held at Sir Samuel Baker Secondary School and is expected to attract between 2,500 and 3,000 athletes and officials.
According to Yabin Ofumba, the publicity secretary of the National Organising Committee, all preparations have been completed to ensure the successful hosting of the national event.
The championship will feature football, netball, handball, woodball, basketball, volleyball, badminton and athletics for both male and female participants.
Ofumba said participants from the host institution are expected to report next Monday, while teams from other institutions will arrive on August 2.
He explained that athletics competitions will take place on August 3 and 4, while the ball games will run from August 6 to 8.
Ofumba, who is also the tutor in charge of games and sports at Gulu College of Health Sciences, said the organising committee is fully prepared and eagerly awaiting the start of the tournament.
However, he noted that one of the key challenges has been mobilising students from distant districts, including Kabale and Kasese, who were sent home for the holidays, to return and participate in the games.
According to him, male participants will be accommodated at Gulu College of Health Sciences’ Laroo Campus, while female participants will stay at the institution’s main campus near Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.
Mildred Auma, the Gulu city senior communications officer, told Radio Rupiny that hosting another major sporting event such as the UHTISA Games reflects the city’s growing capacity to organise national events.
The 2025 UHTISA Games were hosted by Hoima School of Nursing and attracted approximately 2,300 participants from health training institutions across Uganda.
