Gulu city is set to host the National Day for Physical Activity, also known as National Fitness Day, tomorrow, Friday, August 7.
The event will take place at Kaunda Grounds under the theme, "Get Active, Stay Healthy: Physical Activity for Healthy Wellbeing".
It is an annual health initiative launched by President Yoweri Museveni on July 8, 2018, to promote healthy lifestyles and combat the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as diabetes, cancer and hypertension, by encouraging Ugandans to make physical exercise a routine part of their daily lives.
Geoffrey Topiny, the Gulu city health educator, called on everyone to take part in the event, which will commence at 6:00 am with the arrival of participants.
He said the day's activities will include fitness dance sessions, aerobics, spinning, full-body workouts, children's games, football matches, health education, and screening for both non-communicable and communicable diseases.
According to Topiny, the screening services will cover hypertension, heart disease, cancer, sickle cell disease, mental health conditions, tuberculosis (TB), HIV, as well as nutrition assessment and counselling.
Since its launch in 2018, National Fitness Day has been held annually at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.
This year marks the first time the event has been taken outside the capital.
Health minister Dr Chris Baryomunsi is expected to officiate as the chief guest.
