Growth, pride, and progress: Ucanda reflects on She Cranes' journey

When the She Cranes made their historic Commonwealth Games debut in 2018, Jocelyn Ucanda was part of the contingent as the team's manager.

Eight years later, she returned to the global stage in a very different capacity, as President of Netball Uganda.

For Ucanda, the journey from team manager to the country's top netball administrator reflects both personal growth and the progress the sport has made in Uganda.

"It is an exciting moment for me. Growth is part of life. Back then, I was very passionate about what I was doing. Today, I am celebrating this position, and I am glad to be part of the growth of netball in the country," Ucanda said.

Having witnessed the She Cranes' maiden appearance at the Commonwealth Games, Ucanda understands how far the team has come. She has remained closely connected to the sport through its various stages of development and has played a key role in guiding Netball Uganda during a period of transition and renewal.

Her return to the Commonwealth Games comes at a time when the She Cranes are aiming to improve on their fifth-place finish from the 2022 Birmingham Games. The squad heads into the tournament with a blend of experienced players and exciting young talent, all determined to challenge for a place on the podium.

As President, Ucanda believes the team's continued participation at the highest level is proof of the steady progress of Ugandan netball and the hard work invested by players, coaches, and administrators over the years.

While the players battle for results on the court, Ucanda will be watching from the stands with immense pride, knowing she has been part of the She Cranes' Commonwealth Games journey from the very beginning.
