The Uganda Gazelles beat DR Congo 78-62 to book their slot in the FIBA AfroBasket quarterfinals.

This is the first time the Gazelles are reaching the Afrobasket quarterfinal stage after three appearances on the continent.

The Gazelles went to the AfroBasket as underdogs the fact that they qualified through a wild card, and no one gave them a chance to even come out of Group C where the Gazelles were pooled against Africa's best Senegal and Mali.

Despite an opening 66-80 loss against Mali, the Gazelles never lose hope, they found redemption against Senegal 85-83 which boosted their confidence levels.

The 78-62 victory against Congo means that Uganda will face Rwanda the hosts who also finished top of group A.

Both Jannon Otto and Jane Asinde were stars with 18 points, while Claire Lamunu added 12 points and 14 rebounds.

Melissa Akullu contributed 10 points and 9 rebounds, Lydia Babirye added 11 assists and Hope Akello got 11 rebounds in the Gazelles' winning effort.
