Melissa Akullu delivered a standout performance as the Uganda Gazelles kicked off their FIBA AfroBasket campaign with a commanding 88–51 victory over Guinea on Sunday at the Palais des Sports Treichville Arena in Abidjan, Ivory Coast.
The centre led all scorers with 26 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, anchoring the Gazelles’ dominant start to the tournament. Team captain Jane Asinde added a strong all-around effort, contributing 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists.
Despite Guinea briefly leading 6–2 and 9–4—thanks to early shooting from Batouly Camara and Fatoumata Jallow, the Gazelles quickly regrouped and seized control, building a 10-point cushion at 29–19 in the second quarter. A powerful third-quarter surge, including a 22–0 run, ultimately sealed Uganda’s emphatic win.
Akullu credited preparation and mindset for the result:
“Our coaching staff prepared us well, and we knew this win was key with tougher teams ahead like Senegal. We gelled, came focused, and I’m thrilled we got the win.”
Head coach Nicholas Natuhereza echoed her sentiment:
“We wanted a strong start despite the nerves. Once we settled in and executed, everything clicked. I hope we carry this momentum forward.”
The Gazelles now turn their focus to Senegal in their next fixture, poised and confident after a stellar opening statement.
