The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) has suspended the implementation of the new format for the 2025/2026 StarTimes Uganda Premier League (UPL) season.
The decision was reached following extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including UPL clubs, league sponsors, and the Uganda Premier League Board.
According to FUFA, Rule 14:4-12 of the FUFA Competition Rules 2025—which outlines the revised league structure—will not apply this season. The suspension is intended to give stakeholders more time to fully understand and adapt to the proposed reforms through targeted sensitisation efforts.
“The FUFA Executive Committee has taken a decision to suspend the format of the 2025/2026 StarTimes Uganda Premier League season,” the federation stated. “This follows consultations with the UPL clubs, league sponsors and the Uganda Premier League Board.”
While the specifics of the new format were not detailed in the statement, FUFA emphasized that the pause will allow for broader engagement and education among all parties involved in the league’s operations.
The move comes amid growing interest in the future of Ugandan football and the evolving structure of its top-tier competition. With the suspension now in effect, the current season will proceed under the previous format, ensuring continuity while discussions around reform continue.
FUFA has pledged to work closely with stakeholders to ensure that any future changes are well understood and effectively implemented.
