The Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) and MTN Uganda have launched a nationwide campaign inviting Ugandans to design the next official Uganda Cranes jersey that will be worn during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The initiative, unveiled on Thursday (June 18) at MTN Uganda's headquarters on Old Port Bell Road in Kampala, gives football fans, designers and other creatives an opportunity to contribute ideas for a jersey that reflects Uganda's identity, culture and pride.
The winning design will become the national team's official kit for the continental tournament, which Uganda will co-host alongside Kenya and Tanzania next year.

The campaign comes after years of criticism from some Uganda Cranes supporters who felt the team's jerseys lacked a strong national identity and did not compare favourably with those of other African nations. Fans have often called for designs that better represent Uganda's heritage, traditions and colours.
Among those who publicly pushed for a redesign was the Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga. A passionate football supporter, Mayiga previously suggested that the national team's jersey should incorporate more Ugandan cultural symbols and traditional emblems.
He also questioned the suitability of the nickname "Cranes", arguing that the Crested Crane is a gentle bird and proposing stronger national symbols instead.
During the launch, FUFA First Vice President Justus Mugisha said the competition is intended to strengthen the connection between the national team and its supporters.
“This campaign gives every fan a chance to contribute to the Uganda Cranes jersey and make it truly their own. We want Ugandans from all corners of the country to use their creativity to create a jersey that our players will wear with pride on the continental stage,” Mugisha said.

JohnPaul Okwi, who serves as the Manager of Sponsorships and Events
MTN Manager for Sponsorships and Events John Paul Okwi said the initiative is part of the company's efforts to provide platforms that allow Ugandans to showcase their talents.
“Through our Free Your Fire platform, we continue to create opportunities for Ugandans to express their creativity. This challenge is not just about designing a jersey, but about creating a symbol that represents and unites the nation,” Okwi said.
The competition is open to all Ugandans, whether professional designers or football fans with original ideas. Entries can be submitted individually or as a group through the mtnmore.com from June 22 to July 9.
After submissions close, seven finalists will be selected and invited to a three-day boot camp from July 14 to 16 to refine their concepts with the help of experienced creatives.
One final design will then be chosen for production and unveiled as the new Uganda Cranes jersey, with the winning individual or team receiving a reward of sh50m.
