Brigadier General Eriazile Sake Okolong has urged young people not to underestimate the value of football, saying it is more than just a game but a profession and a source of employment.

While representing Lieutenant General Sam Okiding, the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces of the UPDF, as chief guest during the launch of the third edition of the 2026 Millennium Annual Games and Sports Tournament, Okolong revealed how football has influenced both his life and military career.

Okolong, who formerly commanded the 405 Brigade, echoed that talent holds potential for employment and should not be underestimated.

He said playing professional sports offers a unique blend of high earning potential at the elite level, unparalleled global travel experiences, and the opportunity to make a career out of a personal passion.

However, he cautioned the youth against engaging in dubious activities and instead challenged them to harness their talents for meaningful growth.

Daniel Apieun, the organising chairperson of the Millennium Annual Games and Sports, observed a remarkable increase in the number of participating teams in this year's edition, which kicked off on Saturday at Kaler Primary School Playground in Mukura Town Council, Ngora District.

According to Apieun, this year alone the number has risen to 28 teams, compared to 24 registered during the second edition.

"We have managed to register teams across all Teso districts, including Kapelebyong, Katakwi, Soroti City, Kumi, Ngora, Serere, Amuria, Kalaki and Kaberamaido among others," he said.

He said the tournament's ideology is to use games and sports to instill discipline, promote patriotism, and foster unity and collaboration among the youth.

Apieun explained that through sports, the youth strengthen cohesion, sharpen discipline, and better understand each other's abilities – skills that directly translate into operational readiness.

Winners during the championship will walk away with cash, trophies and recognition certificates aimed at motivating players.
