After two incidents last year that endangered spectators during motorsport events, the Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) has moved to tighten safety measures.

Determined to prevent a repeat, the federation has embarked on refresher courses for safety marshals ahead of the new season.

A safety workshop was held in Ndeeba on Jonan Luwum Day, where marshals were trained by ASSP Husein Nsobya, Dr. Derrick Komakech, and Pearl of Africa Rally Clerk of the Course Kisitu Mayanja. The sessions focused on accident response, crowd control, and general safety management, with the first test of these measures set for the Mbale Rally next month.

“Always be observant and familiar with the area you are posted. There might be individuals who want to cause trouble during an event, so you have to be careful,” ASSP Nsobya advised. He further urged the federation to regularly involve police in event organisation to ensure professionalism and order.

FMU vice president and head of safety Hajji Hamid Gombe emphasized the importance of time management, noting that safety officials play a crucial role in ensuring events start promptly. Dr. Komakech added that organisers must deploy highly qualified medical personnel and standard ambulances to guarantee effective emergency response.

The workshop, organised by FMU in partnership with the Uganda Motorsport Safety Marshals Association (UMSMA), was attended by FMU general secretary Reynold Kibira, UMSMA president Ronald Batalaze, and FMU safety official Jamil Mukyakaze.

The new safety measures will be implemented starting with the Mbale Rally in March, the opening leg of the National Rally Championship, followed by the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in Mbarara in April 2026.
