The Federation of Motorsport Uganda (FMU) and the Uganda Rally Drivers Association (URDA) will meet on March 18 to discuss drivers’ demands for financial support and changes to the expanded eight-round rally calendar.

The talks follow a weekend meeting where more than 70 licensed drivers agreed on a common position.

Their main concerns are high costs, long travel distances, and a calendar they say does not match their financial realities.

URDA acting president Didas Masiko explained that drivers want the annual Boxing Day event added to the calendar, with proceeds going directly into their SACCO. “We are not asking for a lot. The money generated will help support the sport now and in the future,” he said.

Drivers argue that the extra round increases expenses for fuel, accommodation, and meals. National champion Ronald Sebuguzi called for fuel support and the removal of entry fees, noting that government now provides three billion shillings annually to the sport.

FMU General Secretary Raynold Kibira confirmed receipt of URDA’s letter and welcomed dialogue, but insisted the eight rounds will likely remain. He said the National Sports Act of 2023 requires federations to stage events in at least 75% of districts to gain recognition.

Some officials criticized the law, saying it ignores the risks of rallying in areas without hospitals or proper safety infrastructure.

Despite the tension, Kibira assured drivers that new partners are coming on board to boost budgets and allow for subsidies. As a concession, FMU has scheduled the final round in the central region to reduce travel costs.

The 2026 NRC season begins with the Mbale City Rally on March 27–28, with over 50 crews expected. Whether unity or division defines the starting grid will depend on the outcome of the March 18 talks.
