The first round of the 2025 National Basketball League (NBL) concluded on May 21, capping off weeks of thrilling matchups, emerging talent, upsets, and standout team performances.

As clubs prepare for the second round, each now has a clearer sense of what must improve to stay competitive.

Namuwongo Blazers set the pace

Namuwongo Blazers dominated the first round, winning all 11 of their matches to top the league table with 22 points. After reaching the semifinals last season, the Blazers bolstered their squad with experienced players like James Okello, Tonny Drilleba, Joel Lukoji, and Jimmy Enabu.

A key highlight came in March, when they edged defending champions City Oilers 81–80. They also secured victories over KCCA Panthers, Livingstone, Sommet BC, Rezlife Saints, and UCU Canons, solidifying their status as title contenders.

KCCA Panthers trail close behind

The KCCA Panthers sit in second place with 8 wins from 11 games. The additions of Kimambo Livingstone and Stanley Mugerwa have helped elevate their performance. Notably, they registered wins over both City Oilers and JKL Dolphins.

Their three losses—against Namuwongo Blazers, JT Jaguars, and Kampala Rockets—exposed areas that need fine-tuning heading into the second round.

JT Jaguars, UCU Canons, and Kampala Rockets in tight contest

JT Jaguars are third with 7 wins. Led by standout performer Peter Sifuma, who’s averaging 12 points and 8 rebounds per game, the Jaguars picked up three recent wins but stumbled against Sommet BC and UCU Canons.

UCU Canons follow closely in fourth, also with 7 wins and 18 points overall. Their roster additions have kept them competitive, punctuated by a vital win over City Oilers.

Kampala Rockets, also with 7 wins, round out the top five. Their well-balanced lineup has paid off early in the season, keeping them in the playoff conversation.

Victoria Crocs impress

Back in the top flight after relegation in 2022, the Victoria Crocs sit sixth with 17 points from 6 wins. Their solid recruitment strategy and renewed focus suggest they’re determined to avoid a quick return to the lower division.

City Oilers struggling to find their rhythm

In a surprising twist, defending champions City Oilers are in seventh place with just 5 wins. A string of injuries, management issues, and the departure of key player Ivan Muhwezi have all contributed to their inconsistent form.

Their first-round campaign ended with a loss to UCU Canons, one of six defeats they suffered in the opening phase.

Fierce battle for playoff spots

Rezliffe Saints occupy eighth with 5 wins, closely trailed by ninth-placed Sommet BC. Both teams have shown flashes of potential but will need greater consistency to remain in playoff contention.

JKL Dolphins are in tenth place with only 4 wins, despite a flurry of new signings during the preseason.

Livingstone, promoted last season, have struggled to adapt to the top tier, managing only one win so far and sitting second from the bottom.

KIU Titans hit rock bottom

At the bottom of the table are the KIU Titans, winless after 11 games. The decision to rely solely on student-athletes has backfired, raising serious questions about their future in the league.

Transfers and the Second Round

The second round begins on May 30, with teams already eyeing reinforcements. The mid-season transfer window, which opened on May 18, will remain open until June 18. Many clubs are expected to make strategic signings to strengthen their squads for the decisive half of the season.
