Tolbert Onyango’s Achievements
African 7s Champions (4 titles)
Two Rugby 7s World Cup Appearances
Every great coach leaves an indelible mark on the players they mentor—and Tolbert Onyango is no exception.
Just days ago, the Uganda Rugby Union made a stunning announcement: National 7s head coach Tolbert Onyango had stepped down from his role. His longtime assistant, Allan Otim, will take over in an acting capacity.
Affectionately known as “Toli,” Coach Tolbert departs after a decade of excellence, leaving the Uganda Sevens program in a formidable position. Under his stewardship, Uganda clinched four African 7s Championships, made two Rugby 7s World Cup appearances, and delivered a string of impressive international performances that elevated the team to continental dominance and global respect.
Players like Philip Wokorach and Adrian Kasiito, who rose through the ranks under Onyango’s guidance, speak glowingly of his influence.
“I will miss everything about that man,” said Wokorach. “He was more than just a coach to me. He’s known me since childhood. Words can’t describe how I feel—he is a very good man.”
Wokorach is one of many players who emerged from Kyadondo Rugby Club, where Tolbert coached when not leading the national side. His departure has left the rugby community in disbelief.
For many, his greatness extended far beyond tactics and titles—a rare trait in Ugandan sport.
“He is an honest, confident, and kind man. That’s all a player really needs to perform and win,” Wokorach added. “Beyond that, he remains a pillar, an inspiration, and a blessing to me. I am ‘Philip Wokorach’ today because of voices, hearts, and souls like his.”
Kasiito echoed the sentiment: “Man, I love that man. He is my best coach ever and he is highly respected on my end.”
Coach Tolbert was a tireless advocate for the National 7s program, and it’s no coincidence that Ugandan Rugby Sevens reached its peak under his leadership. He nurtured countless stars, and his legacy is firmly secured.
A decade is a long time to lead a national team. Otim’s role as caretaker will be challenging, especially as the squad transitions, with several core players moving to the 15s setup. Yet, having served as Onyango’s assistant for years, Otim’s appointment signals the Union’s commitment to continuity.
Tolbert leaves behind a strong foundation and a project poised for its next chapter. The torch has been passed, but the flame he lit will continue to guide Ugandan rugby for years to come.
