Defending champions Heathens kicked off their Uganda Rugby Cup campaign with a hard-fought victory over Impis at Kyadondo Grounds on Saturday. Despite the win, the team admitted the match was more challenging than the final score suggested.

Newly appointed head coach Tolbert Onyango, who recently stepped down from his role with the Rugby Cranes Sevens, acknowledged the intensity of the encounter. Heathens led 10–03 at halftime but had to rally in the second half to secure a 29–06 win.

“Impis were very tough, as the scoreline shows. They even led 6–3 at one point before we turned things around,” Onyango said.

“People should watch out for Impis. We’re now focused on our next game in Kitgum, and there’s plenty to improve in both defense and attack.”

Meanwhile, the Pirates delivered a crushing blow to Kigezi in both the men's and women's fixtures. The men’s team recorded a staggering 154–09 victory, while the women’s side blanked the Avengers 81–0, marking the most dominant performances of the day.
