Following the 2026 FIFA World Cup, European football returns. SuperSport on DStv and GOtv will broadcast another season of top-tier matches.

The UEFA Super Cup opened the season on August 12, with Paris Saint-Germain claiming a second consecutive title against Aston Villa after winning back-to-back UEFA Champions League trophies. Aston Villa, having advanced in European competition, tested themselves against a leading club.

The match represented a contest between established success and emerging ambition, with the season’s first trophy going to France.

Attention then turned to the FA Community Shield, held in Cardiff on August 16. Premier League champions Arsenal met FA Cup winners Manchester City in a match that provided a glimpse of what might happen in the fight for the English title.

Manchester City began a new era under Enzo Maresca on a losing note, as Arsenal started their title defence with a trophy after the 3-0 win. Both teams were expected to deliver a competitive, intense match, but Arsenal showed much more hunger to win.

La Liga resumed on Friday, August 15, with Alves beating Getafe 3-0 while Sevilla were 2-1 winners over Rayo Vallecano.

On Saturday, Racing Santander drew 2-2 with Villarreal as Espanyol shared the spoils with Levante, and Deportivo drew with Elche, giving clubs an early chance to build momentum. Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Atletico Madrid will start later due to Spain’s World Cup victory, allowing other teams to compete for an early advantage.

Other teams will aim to secure points and build momentum before the leading clubs rejoin the competition. The Premier League will burst into life with an opening weekend packed with intriguing fixtures. Champions Arsenal begin their title defence at home against promoted Coventry on Friday, with the Gunners looking to set the tone from the opening whistle.

Manchester United visit Hull, Liverpool travel to Newcastle, and Manchester City host Bournemouth. Brentford face Tottenham, and Chelsea start their campaign at Fulham. The opening round features promoted teams, established contenders, and title hopefuls.

Serie A also begins, adding to the busy European football schedule. Inter Milan start their title defence against Monza, aiming to continue their strong form.

Napoli travel to Genoa while Milan face Torino, Juventus visit Frosinone, and Roma host Fiorentina. As ever in Italy’s top flight, tactical battles will be central to the contest, with every point carrying weight from the opening weekend.

Across Europe, from Paris and Cardiff to Madrid, Manchester, Milan, and Rome, the new football season is set to begin.

SuperSport on DStv and GOtv will broadcast the season’s key fixtures, rivalries, and highlights from the first match onward.
