Entebbe wins inaugural Inter-Club Golf Championships

Entebbe sealed the championship when they topped the Entebbe leg with a total of 380 points beating the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) which finished second to the overall title by 40 points.

Entebbe Golf Club amassed 1125 points over three legs to win the inaugural edition of the Inter-Club Golf Championships between Kigali, Entebbe, and the Uganda Golf Clubs.

Entebbe sealed the championship when they topped the Entebbe leg with a total of 380 points beating the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) which finished second to the overall title by 40 points.

In the first leg played in Kigali, Entebbe had collected 368 in coming third to Kigali and UGC came first and second before they added 377 and 380 points from the UGC and Entebbe outings.

UGC came second overall had earlier on Friday and also won on their home course by 388 points while Kigali had also triumphed on their home course by 408 points. Only the best ten stable ford scores per leg counted and contributed to the overall standings.

Entebbe’s best players on Saturday included Jude Ochieng who registered 40 points, Adoch Luwum (39), Allan Mboijana (39), James O'Sullivan (38), Morgan Otile (38), Henry Nsubuga (38), Josef Salani (37), Harry Hakiza (37), Casper Okiru (36) and Joseph Adrapi (35). Casper Okiru 36, Muwanga Nalukoola 36, Patrick Mugisha Muntu 36.

Meanwhile, Ochieng won the Entebbe September Mug competition that was played concurrently with the inter-club championship after he carded 68 nett and beat Josef Salani and John Muchiri by two and three strokes respectively.

On Friday at Kitante William Omaria and Hisae Koshiba returned 40 and 46 points respectively to top the UGC leg contest, where Alex Coutinho and Geoffrey Katooro also chipped in with 38 and 36 points in topping the men’s Group A.

Ashisha Arora (37pts), and Godfrey Nkambwe (36) also contributed to UGC’s win by claiming the Group B accolades while Ernest Wasake (38), Wendy Angudeyo (36), Shamim Juma (42), and Doreen Mwesigye (35) also contributed to the victory.

Ruth Mugisha and Paul Habyarimana were the best guest players on the day having returned 43 and 41 points respectively.

Kigali hosted the first leg of the championship before the UGC and Entebbe legs

The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Nobert Mao and the Rwandan High Commissioner to Uganda Joseph Rutabana presided over the UGC and Entebbe legs.

Mao hailed the organisers and said the tournament was an act of diplomacy that eases the friction between the two nations while Rutabana also welcomed the tournament ‘that strengthens the relationship between the participating countries and noted that sports play a big role and is a catalyst for diplomacy and thanked the organisers for the hospitality.

“Golf has won, our region and Africa have won,” Mao stated.

“These interactions are good for our relations because we are so intertwined and the same people,” Rutabana added.

The different clubs were led by their captain; Emmanuel Wamala (UGC), Andrew Kulayigye (Kigali), and Jacob Byamukama (Entebbe).

Wamala urged the golfers to embrace the championship by travelling to the different legs at the event aimed at fostering good relationships between the East African countries.
