With the biggest golfing showpiece the Uganda Open only a few weeks away, golfers get the opportunity to sharpen their skills this weekend in several tournaments spread across the country.

The biggest attraction is the Lira Open at the Lira Sports and Golf Club course where action returns with both amateurs and professionals in action at the nine-hole course.

The professionals will be the first to take on the course on Friday as they begin their fight for the sh10m kitty, in a 36-hole contest beginning with the opening 18 holes on Friday before another round on Saturday.

On Saturday, amateurs from different parts of the country will then fight it out for different prizes in the traditional men's and ladies’ groups A-C.

Last month, Lira held their first ladies' open with Wendy Angudeyo beating Rita Apell on count-back to win the ladies Group A after they both returned 83nett.

Resty Nalutaaya, Jennifer Opio, Sheila Kesiime, Godlive Nayebare, and Joyce Kisembo were some of the other outstanding ladies in the one-day event.

In Kampala on Saturday, golfers at the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) will then get divided attention as they fight for honours in both the September Stanbic Mug which will be played concurrently with the annual UGC versus Entebbe inter-club championships.

UGC is fresh from winning their leg of the East Africa Inter-Club Golf Championships between Kigali, Entebbe, and the Uganda Golf Clubs. They returned 388 points to beat Entebbe and Kigali who carded 354 and 341 points respectively.

But it was Entebbe that sealed the championship when they topped the Entebbe leg with a total of 380 points beating the Uganda Golf Club (UGC) which finished second to the overall title by 40 points.

So, the likes of Jude Ochieng, Adoch Luwum, Allan Mboijana, James Osullivan and Morgan Otile, and Ruth Mugisha will be eager to replicate what they achieved last weekend against the likes of William Omaria, Hisae Koshiba, Alex Coutinho, Godfrey Nkambwe, Ernest Wasake and Geoffrey Katooro who were some of the best players during the East African tourney.

On October 1, golfers will then head to Fort Portal to compete in the Uganda Coffee Golf Cup at Tooro Club before they return to the Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort and Spar to compete in the Uganda Ladies Open, October 6-8; that kick-starts the four-in-one Uganda Open tournaments.
