Joseph Cwinyaai carded a record-setting 16-under 200 over 54 holes to win the 7th edition of the Absa Captains Bell Tournament at the Uganda Golf Club on Thursday.
In a remarkable display of skill, the national team captain achieved the best result of his golfing career at the Kitante course. He began with an impressive score of 9-under 63, which equaled the course record during the opening round.
He then followed it up with a score of 1-under 71 and secured his victory with a final score of 6-over 66. With this outstanding performance, he claimed his third consecutive championship title. Earlier, he won the Presidents Cup tournament at Serena, followed by the Mayombo Memorial Open championship on his home course in Fort Portal, before achieving this recent victory.
“The course was playing good and fine but I’m also in good shape for tournaments. I’m in a good run of form and I have been putting in the hard work,” Cwinyaai said.
“It is that part of the year where we go into the busiest part of the year and it is about that time I started playing very well,”
National junior golf team player Anthony Otukei finished second overall after impressive scores of 70 and 5-under 67 in the second and third rounds, respectively, while Entebbe Pearl of Africa Golf Series champion Lawrence Walakira finished third, 19 strokes away from the winner.
Peace Kabasweka (234) topped the ladies’ category, winning by four strokes ahead of Harriet Kitaka and Gloria Mbaguta, who tied for second with 238gross each after the three rounds. Meron Kyomugisha finished fourth, five strokes away, and will partake of the sh2m for the ladies. The top six men will share out sh6m.
