World Cross Country champion Joshua Cheptegei will make another attempt at breaking the 5km world record he set at the Monaco Herculis Run last year.

Cheptegei made history last year by breaking the world record for the 5km road race with a time of 12:51 on February 16.

Running alone from the start, the 23-year-old Ugandan smashed through the event's 13-minute barrier, clipping a massive 27 seconds from the previous record of 13:18 set by Kenya's Rhonex Kipruto en route to his 10km world record in Valencia on 12 January.

He is due to compete at the 11th edition of the Monaco Run this Sunday with a lot expected from him.

Cheptegei who will miss the National Cross Country Championships also scheduled for this weekend in Tororo has opted for another world record attempt.

His two-year absence from the National Cross Country Championship now provides the opportunity for elite runners and newcomers to showcase their abilities ahead of the 2021 Africa Cross Country Championships.

At the dawn of 2021, the future of sports events in Monaco remained uncertain.

However, the Monaco Athletics Federation decided to organise a 5km Monaco Run in order to provide passionate runners with a competition on February 14th.

In collaboration with Monaco’s authorities, a safe system has been established for the athletes and the volunteers for this edition. Consequently, and given the need to ensure safety, no other distance is likely to take place this year.

It has been decided that all runners must provide proof of a negative PCR test, done between Thursday and Saturday, less than 72 hours before the start.

The official route for the race planned to be faster than the last two years was unveiled at the beginning of January.
