Elisha Yeko, a first-year student pursuing a diploma in Information Technology at Bugema University, claimed gold in the 10,000m race at the ongoing AUUS Games.
The former Kapchorwa Parents Secondary School student expressed humility and joy at his achievement, describing it as a major motivation to pursue his athletics career alongside his academics.

“I’m humbled and happy because it’s my first time competing at such a level and winning gold. My focus is to complete my academics and pursue a career in athletics,” Yeko said.
Inspired by world champion Joshua Cheptegei, Yeko trains in Cheptegei’s camp. At just 19 years old, he previously competed in the World Secondary Schools Championships in France, where he missed out on a medal. Winning gold at the university stage, he said, means a great deal to him.
Bugema’s Solomon Cherotwo finished fourth in the same race but remained optimistic. “This is my first time, and I’m in my first year. I’m going to train harder and come back stronger next time,” Cherotwo said.
Yeko’s victory not only highlights Bugema’s growing presence in athletics but also underscores the rising talent emerging from Uganda’s universities.
