Chemutai, Kiplangat dominate National Road Running Championships in Tororo

Uganda Police's Martha Chemutai and UPDF's Alex Kiplangat dominated the National Road Running Championships held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, in Tororo District, as athletes battled for places on Uganda's team to the World Athletics Road Running Championships.

Chemutai won the women's 5km race in 15:34.9, while Kiplangat claimed the men's 5km title in 13:38.2.

Felister Chekwemoi emerged victorious in the women's one-mile race, clocking 4:41.3, while Silas Chemutai won the men's one-mile title in 4:00.0.

The championships attracted more than 200 athletes, with the top performers set to be considered for selection to the national team that will represent Uganda at the World Athletics Road Running Championships, scheduled for September 19–20 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Uganda Athletics Federation Vice-President Lawrence Kavuma praised the athletes for putting up strong performances and said the technical team would base its selection on results from the championships.

"The technical team is working on a very good team selection depending on the athletes' performance. After selecting the team, we shall put them into camp for training so that we win titles," Kavuma said.

Chemutai, delighted with her 5km victory, credited her coaches and teammates for helping her prepare for the championships.

"I am so happy to have won this race, and I am going back to train even harder for better results," Chemutai said.

The championships provided an important platform for Uganda's road-running talent to demonstrate their form ahead of the global competition. Athletes selected to the national team are expected to undergo further preparations before travelling to Denmark.

Uganda will be seeking strong performances in Copenhagen as the country looks to build on its reputation as one of Africa's leading long-distance running nations.
