Chemutai claims bronze in women's 3,000m steeplechase

Uganda's Peruth Chemutai added another medal to her collection after securing bronze in the women's 3,000m steeplechase at Scotstoun Stadium on Wednesday.

The Olympic champion crossed the line in 9:09.96, finishing behind Kenya's Faith Cherotich, who won gold in a Games record time of 9:01.76, and England's Elise Thorner, who took silver in 9:05.45.

Chemutai, who has been Uganda's leading female distance runner since her Olympic triumph, produced a determined performance in a highly competitive field.

She remained in contention throughout the race but could not match the pace set by Cherotich, who dominated from the front and shattered the previous Commonwealth Games record.

Thorner, backed by a passionate home crowd at Scotstoun Stadium, delivered a strong finish to claim silver, leaving Chemutai to settle for bronze.

Despite missing out on gold, Chemutai's bronze adds to Uganda's growing medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. It is the latest achievement in a career that has already seen her claim Olympic gold and multiple podium finishes on the global stage.

The race was one of the most anticipated events of the athletics program, with a deep field that included world-class athletes from across the Commonwealth. Cherotich's record-breaking performance underlined Kenya's continued strength in distance running, while Thorner's silver highlighted England's growing competitiveness in the event.

For Uganda, Chemutai's medal ensures the country remains a force in distance running, even as the men's 10,000m event ended without a podium finish earlier in the Games.

The Ugandan contingent will now look ahead to the remaining track events, hoping to add to their medal collection before the games conclude.
