Tony Kisadha and Richard Mwami advanced to the semifinals of the Entebbe Stanbic Matchplay Challenge after defeating Stephen Ojambo and Hebert Kamuntu 4&2 in the quarterfinals at Entebbe Club on Saturday.

The 2024 finalists looking to win the event for the first time will now take on the pair of Brian Manyindo and Mark Musinguzi, who eliminated Bob Drani and Geoffrey Byamugisha, 4&3, the second-best match play score, earning them extra prizes from the sponsors.

“It's been a good experience, thanks to our sponsors of the day, Stanbic Bank. Very good to see them sponsoring the golf game, getting involved, and making an impact here. We're very thankful, and we hope this partnership with the golf fraternity continues, because we're already reaping the dividends.

“We were playing a very strong team, being in the quarter-finals; all eight pairs are quite strong. So, we started off well, holding our ground on the first nine, going three up at the turn, which set a very good foundation for the back nine, where we went five up at hole 11, and then probably complacency or some nerves came in, and they came back to three up. It got a bit tough, but we managed to finish the job on green 15,” Musinguzi said.

“It was not easy, but a well-earned victory. This is our second season as a pair, but we've known each other for a very long time. Brian and I went to the same high school, so we've known each other for a long time.”

“When you get to the semis, you want to get to the final, so we're looking to get to the final and cause some upsets there. We believe we can finish the job,” Musinguzi stated. The second semifinal will pit Ronald Pulle/Michael Monne, who saw off Evelyne Atukunda/Edrea Kagombe 5&4, against each other, also picking up extra prizes. Atukunda had to fight it out alone, as her partner, who doubles as her mom, was reportedly away on vacation. Sam Kacungira and Vincent Katutsi also matched on to the semis after a hard-fought 2UP victory over the 2025 finalists Henry Nsubuga/Picole Lukyamuzi, whom they had also eliminated from an earlier edition. Kacungira/Katutsi will now face off against the pair of Pulle/Monne in the event, where the overall winners walk off with air tickets, among other exciting prizes. “It was tough. We were playing very hard, guys. But it began so well. I have a very good partner. Sam is a great partner. He began with a birdie on the first,” Katutsi noted.

“We took the second as well, which was a pretty good lead for the first holes. But along the way, these guys caught up. They were two up by the end of the first nine. But then we could see that the atmosphere was that these guys wanted to win, and everybody else was supporting them. So I told Sam it's only fair we win.

He added that they were pleased with the hard-fought victory, especially since their opponents had previously eliminated them. Katutsi highlighted their five-year partnership and noted this result marks progress. He acknowledged the semifinals will be challenging but expressed determination to perform well.

Kacungira explained that their teamwork was crucial, especially given the handicap advantage their opponents held. Their strategy was to halve holes where their opponents had strokes and win those where they did not.

He acknowledged the high caliber of the remaining teams and expects a close match in the semifinals, affirming their commitment to giving their best effort.
