Olympian Shadir Musa Bwogi’s stunning performance saw him knockout Uganda Police’s Ivan Magumba in under three minutes of the first round of their fight.

In beating Magumba alias Bones Bones Machette in two minutes and 51 seconds, Bwogi is now the newly crowned national super middleweight king.

His performance against Magumba is without a doubt the best of his boxing career so far that has seen him face off in a trilogy of fights with David Ssemujju during their time on the national boxing team, The Bombers.

In a fully packed MTN Arena in Lugogo in the wee hours of Sunday morning, Bwogi entered the ring at exactly 4:07 am.

Some fans looked fatigued having been made to wait for long but when Bwogi and Magumba entered the ring, they got a new lease of life.

Abdul Sabata the 1990 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist was the day’s centre referee with Moureen Mulangira the Africa Boxing Union (ABU) general secretary and fight Supervisor, with 2001 Africa Games gold medalist Irene Ssemakula.

Bwogi dominated from the start, unleashing a barrage of punches on Magumba who countered by landing a heavy right punch that sent Bwogi to the ropes.

In response, it was Bwogi’s potent left hook that sent Magumba to the canvas and even though he managed to get back on his feet, two other knockdowns sent Bwogi’s fans into a frenzy.

Bwogi finishing move came when after a neat feint, landed a brutal hook on Magumba’s chin which knocked the industrious fighter unconscious before medics ran to his rescue.

The two were scheduled to go for 10 rounds but Bwogi got the job done early in what was the first knockout of his professional boxing career.

Bwogi now at three professional fights remains unbeaten since making his professional debut on April 1, 2022, with Herbert Mugarura and Henry ‘Stopper’ Kasujja as his other victims.

World title in sight

“I came into this fight well-prepared for Magumba. When I train well, I’m always a monster. I have proved I’m the best. I fear no one In Uganda and I will punish everyone,” Bwogi told New Vision after his win.

“My focus now is to fight for regional, continental and world titles. You can mark my words, I’m going to break the 18-year jinx since Kassim Ouma won Uganda a world title,” he added.

Magumba who was unbeaten in his six professional fights with five knockouts requested a rematch.

“I want a rematch. I came into this fight not feeling well. If Bwogi is confident he has beaten me, let him fulfil my request,” he said.

In the undercard fights, middleweight John Sserunjogi unanimously defeated DR Congo’s Cedric ‘Cisse’ Muhindo.

Mercy Acayo defeated Sweden-based Sandra Attermo to clinch the national super flyweight title.

The event which was organised by Nara Boxing Promotions, also had two kickboxing fights with Moses ‘Breaker Breaker’ Musisi knocking out Malawi’s Rajab Fahad in the first round.

His longtime rival Kawaga Bamweyana drew with South Sudan’s Richard Omara after suffering a first-round injury.
