Bukooli Namayingo and Bunha register wins as Busoga Masaza Cup continues

Bukooli Namayingo FC and Bunha FC registered victories, while Bukono FC and Budiope FC settled for a goalless draw in matches played over the weekend in the ongoing MTN-Busoga Masaza Cup tournament 2026.

Three matches were played over the weekend: Bukono vs Budiope at Ivukula Sub County headquarters playground in Namutumba district on August 22, Bunha vs Bugabula at Wembley Stadium in Mayuge district, and the Bukooli Namayingo vs Bukooli Bugiri action-packed Bukooli derby at Namayingo Primary School playground in Namayingo district on August 23.

Bukono played out a 0-0 draw with Budiope in the opening game of the weekend. Bukooli Namayingo beat Bukooli Bugiri 2-0, with Eric Odiambo and Joseph Sida finding the net in the 23rd and 87th minutes, respectively. Bunha beat Bugabula FC 1-0, with Augustine Mikanza scoring in the 2nd minute.

At Ivukula Sub County playground, Bukono's Emma Nabola struck over the bar from 25 yards with his left foot as his team continued to pile pressure on the visitors after 16 minutes.

Bukono's Eddy Kizza also took a shot from the area, and it was saved by Budiope's goalkeeper Arafati Billy, who punched it outside.

Budiope tried to catch up with the game, with Ashraf Isanga, Latif Nadiope, and Joel Waiswa combining to pile pressure on Bukono FC's defence in the first half, but all in vain.

In the 70th minute of the second half, Bukono's substitute Abey Owola did everything as he dribbled past Budiope's defence, only for his weak effort from 18 yards to be saved by Arafati Billy in goal. The match ended 0-0. Budiope FC's Joel Waiswa was selected Man of the Match, and Bukono's Samuel Timungu was runner-up.

On Sunday in Namayingo, it was still goalless between Bukooli Namayingo and Bukooli Bugiri by the 17th minute of the first half. But, due to pressing hard, Eric Ojiambo tapped in Yona Nalugoda's cross at close range to give the hosts (Bukooli Namayingo) the lead.

In the 87th minute, Joseph Sida scored with a long-range effort from outside the box to double the hosts' lead. It ended 2-0.

Bukooli Namayingo's Joseph Sida was Man of the Match, while Benjamin Upendo from Bukooli Bugiri was runner-up.

Bukooli Namayingo's head coach Yasin Were said teamwork worked for his team to secure victory.

"My players played at a high pace, and some got tired. I had to make substitutes and gained ground to secure a win," Were said.

Bukooli Bugiri's head coach Afan Kibogo, in his post-match reaction, said this was their first match, but it wasn't their luck to win. He informed supporters that they hope to perform well in the coming matches.

With four matches played so far, only four goals have been scored, with each goal coming from a different player. Bugweri FC's Ali Kiyemba, Eric Odiambo and Joseph Sida of Bukooli Namayingo, and Bunha FC's Augustine Mukanza are the leading scorers with one goal each.

Bukooli Namayingo ties with Bugweri FC with 3 points each in the Nhendha Group, while Bunha leads the Bukowe Group with 3 points, followed by Budiope with one point.

Fourteen teams are competing in the 2026 MTN-Busoga Masaza Cup tournament, sponsored by giant telecommunication company MTN Uganda, under the theme "Abasadha n'empango mukulwanisa Ekifuna Mabunda mu Bawala Abato."

The competition continues this week with two matches. On Wednesday, August 26, Kigulu FC will host Butembe at Iganga Saza Ground, before Luuka welcome Buzaaya FC on Thursday, August 27, at Busalamu Primary School playground.
