Uganda’s USSSA football champions, Buddo SS, began their 2025 ANOCA School Games journey in style, battling back for a thrilling 2–1 win against Tunisia at Stade Hamlaoui in Constantine on Monday.
After a tense first half that saw Tunisia take the lead in the 18th minute, capitalizing on a corner kick after missing an earlier penalty, Buddo found their rhythm in the second half. The game’s momentum shifted dramatically with the introduction of electric winger Abdul Shakur Babi, whose speed and precision sparked a midfield resurgence led by Ephraim Kato, Owen Mukisa, and captain Dickson Barasa.
In the 53rd minute, Barasa leveled the score with a well-placed header from Babi’s pinpoint cross. Two minutes later, Babi turned provider again, delivering another perfect ball for Mukisa to slot home the winner.
The result puts Buddo SS in strong contention to top Group A. They now need just a point in today’s decisive match against Ivory Coast, who sit second after a goalless draw with Tunisia. While group winners secure automatic semifinal slots, only one best runner-up across all groups joins them.
In Group B, competition narrowed after Burkina Faso’s withdrawal. Sudan advanced after edging Nigeria 4–3 on penalties, booking their semifinal place.
In other action, Uganda’s 3x3 girls' basketball team earned bronze with a 21–17 win over Benin in the third-place playoff. Representing Seroma Christian School, Maria Nanyonga, Grace Arek, Melissa Taliba, and Grace Mwesigwa bounced back admirably after a nail-biting 15–14 loss to champions Rwanda in the semifinals.
In swimming, Rahmah Kalungi narrowly missed the podium in the 50m butterfly, finishing fourth with a time of 30.03 seconds. Egypt’s Malak Elshazly took gold.
In badminton, Uganda’s Christine Kadondi showed composure and skill, defeating Algeria’s Lekba Hiba in straight sets (21–10, 21–14) to book her spot in the next round.
Uganda’s varied results across disciplines reflect a growing strength and competitiveness at the continental level, with young athletes continuing to raise the national flag proudly.
