Uganda’s 1500m bronze medalist Loput Kizito is set to be one of the standout names as athletics events get underway today (Friday) at the ANOCA Schools Games in Annaba, Algeria.

Kizito, in prime form, will compete in the men’s 1500m, where he’s expected to battle fierce competition including a formidable Kenyan contingent that arrived early to prepare.

Uganda has dispatched a team of six athletes—three boys and three girls for the inaugural continental schools championship. On the boys’ side, Rashid Atuyambe will feature in the 400m, while Muhwezi Abraham takes on the 100m and 200m sprints. The girls’ lineup includes Baskaline Cherotwo and Chekwemboi Risper in the 1500m, with Karen Chelimo going for glory in the 3000m.

In swimming, Uganda’s medal hopes ride on Paula Nabukeera and Rahmah Kalungi, both returning to action in the 100m backstroke after reaching two finals. Elijah Wamala joins them in the 100m butterfly, while Tumusiime Kodet wraps up the campaign with races in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and backstroke.

Uganda’s badminton journey came to an end in the singles and girls’ doubles quarterfinals. Kadondi Christine fell 2–0 to Egypt’s Noor Mohamed Eltaweel, while Bakaki Marvin lost 2–1 to Algeria’s Sehila Omar. In the doubles, Ayikoru Ruth and Kadondi Christine were eliminated 2–0 by Ghana’s pairing of Adu Moslena and Racheal Quarcoo.

With athletics now taking center stage, Ugandan athletes will look to build on their mixed performances and fly the flag high in Algeria.
