The national boxing team, The Bombers, has entered residential training ahead of the forthcoming 21st edition of the Africa Boxing Championships.

This year’s championship is slated for July 25 to August 6 in Cameroon’s capital, Yaoundé.

17 elite boxers including 11 men and six women, entered residential training on Thursday evening at Forest Park in Buloba.

2022 Commonwealth Games quarterfinalist, light welterweight Joshua Tukamuhebwa, will captain The Bombers to the West African country under gaffer Twaibu Mayanja, deputised by Ramanthan Seguya.

“We are set and ready to gun down Yaoundé. The boys and girls are in good shape ready for action. The few days we are to spend here in camp will help us polish a few areas before we set off," Tukamuhebwa told New Vision Sport.

Other top guns in the team include welterweight Ukasha Matovu, a 2018 Africa Youth Boxing Championship silver medalist, heavyweight and 2014 Commonwealth Games quarterfinalist Solomon Geko, industrious light middleweight Muzamir Ssemuddu, featherweight Kassim Mulungi, cruiserweight Lawrence Kayiwa and Idris Mukiibi.

Emily Nakalema, a quarterfinalist at the 2020 Africa Olympic boxing qualifiers, will lead the ladies' team that consists entirely of debutants in light flyweight Grace Nakinga, bantamweight Nadia Najjemba, featherweight Sharua Ndagire, lightweight Zahara Nandawula, and light welterweight Erina Namutebi.

Uganda finished joint 15th with Guinea on two bronze medals apiece in last year’s edition courtesy of featherweight Jonathan Kyobe and middleweight Yusuf Nkobeza, both of who won't make the team to Cameroon.

Men: Tukamuhebwa (light welterweight), Joseph Kalema (minimum weight), Kassim Mulungi (feather), Wasswa Ssali (lightweight), Ukasha Matovu (welterweight), Muzamir Ssemuddu (light-middleweight), Ronald Okello (middle), Lawrence Kayiwa (cruiserweight), Mukiibi (light heavyweight), Solomon Geko (heavyweight) and James Baraka (super heavyweight).

Women: Grace Nankinga, Nadia Najjemba, Sharua Ndagire, Zahara Nandawula, Erina Namutebi and Emily Nakalema.
