Blick promises support to Futsal ahead of Youth Olympics

International Olympic Committee (IOC) member William Blick has pledged to support the sport of Futsal in the country so as to make a huge step on the international scene.

Futsal being an Olympic sport, Blick says Uganda has the opportunity to qualify their first-ever team for the 2026 Youth Olympics.

“Futsal is a game that should be used for the development of football in the country. It's a game that helps players develop their skills and is much easier to organise. I have had a meeting with the Futsal administration and have brainstormed many ideas that we shall be implementing ahead of the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar. We shall offer our support to the Futsal Association of Uganda to ensure we grow the sport in Uganda,” stated Blick former UOC president.

Blick was speaking on Sunday as the 2022 Futsal Super League got underway at Old Kampala Arena with eight games played.

Defending champions Park FC defeated Kisenyi FC 2-0 before settling to goalless with Aidenal in their opening games.

According to Futsal Association Uganda (FAU) chairman Hamza Jjunju, they have already started planning how they will assemble the team for the games.

“Futsal is a Youth Olympics sport and as FAU, we have developed a clear plan to have a boys’ and girls’ team represent the country for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games. Soon we are to have a Futsal Youth Festival where we are to have an U12 girls and boys team exhibit the game through the coordination of our futsal development office headed by Pius Serugo,” noted Jjunju.

“And we shall run and launch U12 Youth Futsal Leagues for girls and boys starting 2023 as a precursor to following up on the young ones till 2026 tournament which requires U17 players. With such a plan we believe we shall be heading in the right direction.”
