Amus College School has set its sights on retaining both the boys’ and girls’ regional trophies and qualifying for the 2026 USSSA National U-20 Boys Football tournament, scheduled for May 10 to 20, 2026, at Lira Town College in Lira City.

Calvin Opio, Sports Director at Amus College, is confident that his team has the potential to defend its title in the forthcoming zonal competition, set for April 1 to 4, 2026, in Ngora District.

“Amus College started well by winning the boys’ and girls’ football trophies during the district qualifiers, trophies our rivals Bukedea Comprehensive School had won in 2025. Our focus now is to defend the USSSA Teso zonal title again,” Opio said.

Speaking to Vision Sports, Opio acknowledged recent setbacks but remained optimistic about his team’s chances.

Professor Jonas Gumisiriza, Managing Director of Bukedea Comprehensive School, expressed confidence in his side’s preparations.

“We are very set to do our best at the regional championship. The energy and knowledge we applied during the district championship will again be applied at the zonal level,” Gumisiriza said.

He believes his team has assembled a strong squad capable of lifting both the USSSA Teso and USSSA national titles.

“We will play even better at the zonal level. We know our opponents, especially Amus College, Light SS, Serere SS, Otuboi Comprehensive SS, Nyero Rocks High School, Kaberamaido SS, St Martha SS, Labira Girls, and Ngora High School—all champions in their districts, but our aim is to lift the title,” he added.

John Robert Osuu, Chairperson of the Teso Zone, expressed hope that the selected schools will field athletes who are not involved in age cheating. According to Osuu, the journey to the national stage is often fraught with challenges, but the schools are expected to display admirable resilience and skill throughout the tournament.

Eliphaz Opolot Ewalu, Headteacher of Ngora High School, noted that the USSSA National Games in Ngora High School and Bukedea Comprehensive are not only a platform for athletic prowess but also an opportunity for students to foster solidarity, leadership, and personal growth.

“Participating in such a prestigious event is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the students, coaches, and supporters from these schools,” Ewalu said.

A total of 78 teams from across the USSSA Teso region have qualified to participate in the 2026 USSSA Teso Zonal Football Tournament.

In the recently concluded district football championships, Light SS, Serere SS, Otuboi Comprehensive SS, Nyero Rocks High School, Kaberamaido SS, Amus College School, St Martha SS, Labira Girls, and Ngora High School emerged as boys’ champions.

In the girls’ category, Amus College School, Ngora High School, Olila High School, Labira Girls, Katakwi High School, Standard SS, Kaberamaido SS, Wiggins SS, Lwala Girls, and Serere SS claimed district titles.
