Alwi extends NRC lead as title race heats up

This year’s National Rally Championship (NRC) promises to be a tight and exciting race.
The eight-leg KCB Uganda Bank–rolled championship has already gained clusters in the race to the final leg.
Hassan Alwi has already shown signs of being hungrier for this year’s crown, exhibiting great consistency that has enabled him to stay on top of the log.
Alwi, the International University of East Africa Director, has won three of the four legs finished and leads the table with 236 points, 95 ahead of challengers Jonas Kansiime and Moses Lumala, who are tied on 141 points each in the second and third positions, respectively.
The 2021 NRC winner Duncan "Kikankane" Mubiru is in fourth position with 129 points, while Umaru Dauda is fifth with 107.5.
Alwi won the first leg of the championship in Mbale, then missed the podium in the Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally in Mbarara, but returned strong to win both the Masaka-Sembabule Rally and the fourth round, the Soroti-Katakwi Rally.
This has caused debate among the rally fraternity, with the majority already citing the two-time UMOSPOC Kabalega Rally winner as having an upper hand to take the NRC this year.
Of the four remaining legs, Alwi needs to win one and maintain a podium finish in the other three events.
The UMC Rally in the Rwenzori Region, the Gulu Rally in October, the UMOSPOC Kabalega Rally in Hoima-Buliisa, and the MOSAC Rally are the remaining events.
