The Africa Golf Confederation (AGC) president, Johnson Omollo, has tasked the African golfing nations to continue to demonstrate that they are developing golf in Africa by competing in events such as the All-Africa Junior Team Championship for the U-18s.

Omollo was in Tunisia as the 16th edition of the championship ended. He was part of the officials who crowned the South African boys and Moroccan women who won the boys and girls teams that won their respective categories to qualify to represent Africa at this year’s Toyota Junior Golf World Cup in Japan.

“At the event, we thanked Tunisia for hosting a successful event and thanked the 12 countries for participating. Especially the 10 countries that fielded double teams of boys and girls,” Omollo said.

“Golf in Africa is growing; Africa's golf powerhouse, South Africa, was stretched by Tunisia and Morocco until the last round.

African countries must continue to demonstrate that they are developing golf in Africa by competing in such events if they are to qualify for development grants from the R&A,” Omollo noted.

He said participation confirms a country's commitment.

“As a sovereign continent, we must mobilise resources from our governments and the private sector in Africa if Africa is to grow. We can't keep begging as Africa forever from Europeans.

“Junior golf is the future of tomorrow's champions, and Africa’s future is bright if we continue at the current pace of development of junior golf talent.

He said the AGC launched a junior charter in all the 5 regions, and Mauritius will host the inaugural Region 4 Junior Golf Team Championship from August 24-28 to grow competition at an international level in Africa.
