64 school teams learn fate in USSSA football championship draw

The group stage draw for the 2025 USSSA National Boys Football Championship was held on Friday, May 2, at GNS Plaza in Mengo, Kampala, setting the stage for the 64 participating schools.

The teams were divided into 16 groups of four, with the tournament scheduled to run from May 5 to 15 in Ngora district.

FUFA Chief Executive Officer Edgar Watson Suubi, the chief guest at the ceremony, emphasized the importance of school football in nurturing future stars. 

"We don’t take these competitions for granted—they have produced superstars like Mustafa Kizza and Sandra Nabweteme, legends of both school and Ugandan football," he said. The event was also attended by former school football stars Kizza and Nabweteme, alongside officials from the Ministry of Education and Sports.

Grace Abalo, Senior Education Officer at the Ministry of Education and Sports, congratulated the qualifying schools and called for the preservation of sportsmanship. "Sports unites us all, so let’s protect its integrity," she said.

Defending champions St. Julian High School (Mukono) headline Group A, where they will face Lake Side SS, Garama SS, and Labira SS. Tournament heavyweights St. Mary’s Boarding School Kitende were drawn in Group I alongside Bugisu High School, Ssaku SS, and Notre Dam High School. Last year’s runners-up, Amus College School, will compete in Group P against Luwero SS, Masindi SS, and Buziga Islamic School, while Kibuli SS—another strong contender—was placed in Group O with Quality High School (Buikwe), St. Gerard SS, and Green Light Islamic School.

The championship promises intense competition as schools battle for supremacy in Uganda’s premier boys’ secondary school football tournament.
