As this year's National Science Week at Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala ends, we reflect on some of the creations showcased at the week-long expo:

'Airstrike'

Serapio Fanzy Manzi was a busy man, as he had to engage several curious expo goers about his innovation dubbed 'Airstrike'. Unlike what comes immediately to mind, his is not about warfare.

Instead, Airstrike is meant to be used during emergencies, for instance delivering medical supplies.

The creation, installed with a seat, can also be used for recreational travelling, according to Manzi.

Claire Nabweezi, a student of St Joseph's Nsambya Secondary School,  who is studying under the new curriculum that emphasizes practicals over theory, was particularly interested in Manzi's vehicle. Marvelled, the questions kept on flowing.

Manzi used local materials to create Airstrike. A five-litre jerrycan acts as a fuel tanker. It has a switch and accelerator made out of broken pipes.

'Useful virus'

Ibrahim Ntulume from Makerere University has manufactured a virus to fight banana wilt, which can destroy an entire plant.

Bananas are a staple food crop in Uganda and are a source of income for thousands of farmers across the country. Uncontrolled, banana wilt poses a serious food security risk and threatens the livelihoods of many smallholder farmers.

Solutions of innovators like Ntulume could come in handy to save this important crop.

Randy Rubahaiyo from Makerere University College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-security was one of the innovators of organic fertilizers and displayed some of his products.

Treasure Kyeyune showcased a locally made automatic oxygen machine that supplies oxygen for patients in critical condition.

Ryan Ssendege, a technician, drew crowds - including students - with his airspace satellite.

Gloria Nakitende has turned to medicinal plants to make perfumes. The addictive scents wafting from her stall attracted many expo-goers.

Catalytic Fund

Meanwhile, investors who explored ways to fund the startups showcased at the science fair, along with the Private Sector Foundation Uganda (PSFU), staked sh1b as a Catalytic Fund.

Apollo Muyanja, the project director at PSFU, announced the new development during the investors forum.

He said the fund will be used by innovators.

While officially opening this edition of the National Science Week, President Yoweri Museveni endorsed sh500 billion for science and technology, for innovators to use to develop their products.
