Minister Dr. Monica Musenero has emphasised that Science, Technology, and Innovation are key to the country’s transformation agenda.

She said it is impossible to separate the realms of Science, Technology, and Innovation from national economic development and strong economies are realigning their priorities to adapt to the ever-evolving landscape.

“Uganda cannot afford to remain a passive observer as global initiatives, primarily driven by our counterparts in the fields of science-led transformation shape the future that will determine our survival,” Musenero stated.

The minister called on Ugandans to seize the ground-breaking opportunities and align themselves with global developments.

She made the remarks at the Science, Technology and Innovation Secretariat headquarters in Ntinda, a Kampala suburb, during the press launch of National Science Week 2023 scheduled for November 6 to 11, this year, at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds.

This year’s National Science Week 2023 is anchored on the theme, “Uganda Tusimbudde: Our Science-led Journey Towards Socio-economic Transformation.”

The minister said during the event, participants from all walks of life will be offered a hands-on understanding of the remarkable progress Uganda has made in the fields of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

“It is our hope that Ugandans will grasp the profound impact these fields can have on our economic transformation as the Pearl of Africa. Uganda Tusimbudde: Science-led” underscores the pivotal role of innovation, transcending all sectors, in both individual and national growth,” Musenero said.

Showcasing

The thematic areas that will be explored and showcased during the event include pathogen economy which focuses on pathogens and their manipulation for human health including drug and vaccine development.

A pathogen is defined as an organism causing disease to its host, with the severity of the disease symptoms referred to as virulence.

The exhibitors will showcase mobility centered around the manufacturing of automobile products, with Kiira Motors leading the way in providing mobility solutions in the region, import substitution aimed at enhancing the competitiveness of locally made products.

The exhibitors will also showcase infrastructure innovation targeting breakthroughs in energy, railways, roads, airports, nanotechnology, minerals, materials, STI-linked communications, and industrial manufacturing, among others.

Program

The event will kick off with panel discussions focusing on domestic innovations in journalism and media. President Yoweri Museveni is expected to officially launch Science Week 2023 on the second day, November 7, 2023.

On the third day, November 8, 2023, academic institutions across the country shall be invited to bring their students to be inspired on the path to developing scientific innovations. Panel discussions will also be held highlighting the urgent need for nurturing young scientists.

On day four, senior leaders from private organisations, government parastatals, Parliament, and all legislators will discuss on policy and synergy science-led growth.

The Investors Engagement Day will happen on day five, November 10, 2023, and will feature a series of discussions with investors focused on aligning Uganda as the prime investment destination, where returns are guaranteed, especially in the fields of Science, Technology, and Innovation.

The last day of the National Science Week 2023, will be reserved as a family day, which will be dedicated to families, both traditional and modern, to explore the wonders of Uganda's innovations.

The minister said guiding innovation at the family level is crucial for nurturing future innovators. The Prime Minister, Robinah Nabbanja, will close the events.
