JERUSALEM — Israeli researchers have developed a new technology that enables cells to perform simple computations and make decisions, which could pave the way for smarter treatments for cancer and other diseases, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem said Wednesday in a statement.
In a study published in Nature Communications, the researchers described a new system that enables cells to process biological signals simultaneously. Instead of reacting to just one sign of disease, the cells can check for a specific combination of signals before taking action.
Until now, building such genetic programs has been difficult because they required many complicated steps, making them less reliable. The new method uses fewer genetic building blocks, making it more efficient and easier to expand, according to the statement.
In one demonstration, the programmed cells produced Interleukin-15, a protein that helps activate the body's immune system to fight cancer.
The researchers said the technology could lead to smart cell therapies that identify diseased tissue and release treatment only where needed, reducing damage to healthy cells.
