The government has recognised seven scientists for their role in shaping the standard of science, technology, and innovation in Uganda. 

The scientists were recognized on Thursday during the ongoing third National Science Week, which commenced on November 6 and will end on November 11 at the Kololo Independence Grounds in Kampala.

President Yoweri Museveni, accompanied by the First Lady and Education Minister Janet Museveni, presided over the event that was attended by manufacturers, innovators, investors, and others.

The awardees included Christopher Nsambu Matovu (RIP), who invented Uganda's biggest baby incubator, which can hold 10 babies.

Also on the list is Prof. Sandy Stevens Tickodri-Togboa, the brain behind Kiira Motors Corporation. The agency pioneered the electric mobility venture which manufactures cars, tricycles, and motorbikes that are powered by electricity.

Others include Prof. Florence Muranga, who championed research in value addition in matooke (green bananas). The product is gluten-free and is highly sought-after across the world.

Muranga is the head of the Banana Industrial Research and Development Centre.

Prof. Vinand Mukatabala Nantulya was recognized for pioneering research in a vaccine that prevents Newcastle disease in birds.

Prof. Patrick Ogwang was recognized for his role in natural therapeutics and for inventing Covidex, which was a breakthrough remedy for COVID-19.

Dr Moses Kizza Musaazi was an engineer, educator, and innovator at Makerere University. He was recognized for his work in inventing the MAKpads, biodegradable sanitary pads made from papyrus.

Also recognized was Musa Body founder Musa Wakibi, for his pioneer work in developing machinery and equipment of value addition in farming, agro-processing, and logistics.
