The East African Community (EAC), in partnership with the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), is advancing efforts to position journalists at the forefront of Eastern Africa’s digital transformation agenda through a regional media training initiative.
The programme is part of the Eastern Africa Regional Digital Integration Project (EARDIP), a World Bank-supported initiative aimed at strengthening digital connectivity, promoting innovation, and driving inclusive socio-economic growth across the region.
As part of this effort, EAC and IGAD will host a Joint EAC–IGAD EARDIP Regional Media Training Workshop under the theme “Empowering Journalists as Catalysts for Digital Transformation in Eastern Africa.” The two-day training is scheduled for May 7–8, 2026, in Nairobi.
The workshop targets business, technology, and economic affairs reporters from print, broadcast, and digital platforms, particularly those with an interest in regional integration and innovation.
Organisers say the goal is to strengthen journalists’ capacity to understand and accurately report on digital transformation initiatives, including EARDIP.
Participants will be equipped with knowledge on key areas such as cross-border broadband connectivity, data governance, cybersecurity, and interoperable digital services. This is intended to enable more informed reporting that can shape public discourse and support policy awareness across Eastern Africa.
EARDIP is designed to support IGAD’s broader vision of regional integration by promoting a harmonised digital market among member states. The project focuses on expanding affordable internet access, strengthening secure data systems, and enabling seamless digital services across borders.
According to Annette Mutaawe Ssemuwemba, Deputy Secretary General (Customs, Trade and Monetary Affairs), among the training expected outcomes are improved and competitive broadband connectivity, secure and trusted regional data flows, and the development of an integrated digital market that supports trade and service delivery.
“These efforts are expected to unlock new opportunities for businesses and enhance access to digital services for citizens. The project is implemented by IGAD in collaboration with member states, development partners, and the private sector, with joint coordination from the EAC to ensure alignment of regional digital strategies,” she said.
Mutaawe added that by empowering journalists with the right skills and knowledge, EAC and IGAD aim to strengthen the media’s role in driving awareness, accountability, and public engagement in the region’s digital transformation journey.
