Once a stronghold of the opposition district in the Teso sub-region, the National Resistance Movement party (NRM) can now smile after winning the people to their side.

This Friday, the district held celebrations to mark the belated liberation day that the country marked on January 26, in Jinja City.

Thousands of people in the most popular district in Teso region attended the celebrations with the NRM party secretary general, Richard Todwong, as the chief guest.

Michael Olobo the party chairman said that the NRM party has developed deep roots in Serere district with no chance for opposition.

“People have appreciated the developmental projects that the government has brought to the people in the grass root such as Emyooga, Parish Development model, security and appointment of their daughter Hellen Adoa to cabinet as minister of state for fisheries,” Olobo remarked.

Adoa ousted Alice Alaso who was then the secretary general of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and now in the new party Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) as its coordinator.

Serere with three counties has two NRM MPs that include Adoa the district woman MP, Fred Opolot of Pingire county while Emmanuel Omoding an Independent but leaning to the NRM.

Before the tragic death of bishop Patrick Okabe in a road crash in 2022, the district had three NRM MPs.

Elijah Okupa representing Kasilo county is an independent who previously subscribed to FDC before falling out in 2017.

The head of the secretariat of Resident District Commissioners Maj. Martha Asiimwe, the NRM leaders in Teso, religious and cultural leaders are in attendance.
