In Sebei region, an initiative is paving the way for a brighter future for children by combining education with the natural talent of long-distance runners, hoping to get more Olympic and world athletics champions beyond legends like Joshua Cheptegei, Stephen Kiprotich and Jacob Kiplimo.
The initiative dubbed the "Run for Education" programme is transforming lives by identifying and nurturing young athletic talent while ensuring access to quality education. This innovative approach not only empowers vulnerable youth but also positions them to become the next generation of champions: Both on the track and in their communities.

During the event,
New Vision Online learnt that over the past two years, more than 180 students have already benefitted from the programme, gaining opportunities that would otherwise have been out of reach. By blending sports development with academic support, the initiative is creating pathways for holistic growth and breaking cycles of poverty.
Dr Nicholas Kalyebera, the senior manager of partnerships at Compassion International, underscored the transformative impact of the program.
“We saw an opportunity to partner with these churches to use sport as one of the pathways to achieve child and youth development in a region where running is already part of the culture,” he said.
For the past two years, the programme has scouted exceptionally talented young athletes and enrolled them in reputable schools, enabling them to pursue both academic excellence and athletic training.
Bishop Martin Chelangat, the umbrella leader for Pentecostal Assemblies of God in the Sebei and chairperson of the organising committee, lauded the initiative. Reflecting on the longstanding partnership between Compassion International and local churches, he said, “We have worked together since 2006, and they have done remarkable work in areas like education, water systems, children’s rights, and now this survival programme for pregnant mothers.”
He expressed optimism about the potential of "Run for Education" to uplift even more lives in the region.
At its core, the programme targets vulnerable children as young as five or six years old, providing them with comprehensive support for 17 years. This includes education, skills development and post-education guidance, all aimed at helping participants realise their full potential. Philip Musa, the project director of the Tombokori Project Area in Kapchorwa district, highlighted the importance of fostering talent among disadvantaged youth.
“This run for education initiative raises resources from well-wishers and the business community to support the Church,” Musa noted.
“Ultimately, our goal is to groom the next Joshua Cheptegeis and Moses Kipsiros of Uganda. We are calling upon other partners who share this vision to join us in nurturing the incredible talents hidden within the Sebei region.”
For beneficiaries like Chemtai Tabitha, the programme has been nothing short of life-changing.
“I can now continue my education and look forward to a bright future because I am part of this programme,” she shared, her voice filled with gratitude. She credited Compassion International and the partnering churches for turning her life around and giving her hope for a better tomorrow.

The collaboration between Compassion International and the five dominant church groups in the region: Church of Uganda, Deliverance Church, Evangelical Bodies of Christ, Perfection Church and Ministry and Pentecostal Assemblies of God, is set to expand further.
Together, they aim to empower even more young people in the Sebei region, unlocking their potential through education and athletics.
The initiative is cultivating leaders who will drive positive change in their communities. The fusion of talent, education, and mentorship promises to transform Sebei into a beacon of progress and opportunity.
