The Works and Transport Minister, Gen Edward Katumba has scoffed at opposition figures over acts he dubbed ‘misconduct’ during the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+Chaina summits. He said much as the opposition was dissatisfied on some things; they would have waited for visitors to leave before complain.

Recently, while Uganda hosted two high-profile events, the opposition figureheads; Dr Kizza Besigye of Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Robert Kyagulanyi of National Unity Platform (NUP) were part of dramatic scenes where politicians put banana stems in sections of a couple of roads which they said were in bad conditions.

Their activities received mixed response. In some cases, the politicians moved with one or two aides.

On Friday, minister Katumba described the activities as unsuccessful which he said depicts the ill-nature of the act.

“I saw our friends from the opposition resorting to plant matooke stems on the roads; I think they would have planted flowers instead. We should embrace the beauty Uganda has, and build on it for a good picture of our country,” Katumba said.

He added: “You cannot all the tie choose the negative and think it is the best. It is important to be patriotic, love one another and work to make the country better.”

Own NAM projects

Addressing journalists at Uganda Media Centre in Kampala, the minister, however implored Ugandans to own achievements during NAM summit, such as roads, trees and buildings will stay to be used by Ugandans.
