With just two years left to the 2026 general elections, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has emphasised the need for the government to initiate the implementation of electoral reforms to establish a fair and balanced political environment.

During a press conference held Wednesday, January 10, at the party's headquarters in Kampala, Faizo Muzeyi, the party’s head of media and communication, highlighted that this action will contribute to the smooth conduct of campaigns and the polling process.

“As we prepare for the 2025/2026 general elections, UPC is demanding the implementation of electoral reforms that can ease the campaigns and polling,” he added.

He observed that, for example, political parties that have representation in parliament are assisted through the treasury to aid them in carrying out certain daily tasks.

Muzeyi emphasised the requirement stated in Section 14 A (b) of the Political Parties and Organisations Act, which mandates the government to provide equal financial support to political organisations and parties, but this provision has never been put into practice.

He further stated that all key stakeholders must redirect their efforts and take decisive actions as the nation strives to enhance the electoral process.

Muzeyi also highlighted the potential impact of the postponed Women Council Committees, and Local Council 1, and 2 elections on the already crowded national electoral roadmap.

In preparation for the 2026 polls, UPC initiated national mobilisation tours last year.

Muzeyi emphasised that the delayed Women Council Committees, and Local Council I and II elections could result in a congested electoral roadmap.

He further stated, “UPC urges the government and political parties to engage in comprehensive discussions regarding the delayed elections and explore effective ways to secure resources for financing the electoral commission roadmap.”
