Todwong warns NRM leaders against supporting independent LC I candidates

The National Resistance Movement (NRM) Secretary General, Richard Toodwong, has tasked party leaders in the Acholi sub-region to mobilise resources and support for NRM flag bearers contesting for Local Council (LC) I, LC II and Women League positions in the forthcoming elections scheduled for July 28, 2026.
Addressing top NRM leaders in the Acholi sub-region in Gulu City on Tuesday, he urged party leaders to rally support and resources behind the NRM flag bearers so that the party wins all the positions in the Acholi sub-region.
"No NRM member should support any independent candidate in the forthcoming LC and Women League elections. We need to mobilise and rally support for our own flag bearers in all the villages across the country so that we sweep all the positions," Toodwong said.
Commending the LC structures which he said supported the party during the general elections and the victory of many top NRM leaders, Toodwong urged the electorate to elect leaders who are trustworthy and easy to hold accountable.
He urged leaders to support the forthcoming elections, noting that Local Council leaders play a fundamental role in supporting government programmes and development.
According to the Electoral Commission, Uganda has 71,214 villages, where members are preparing to elect their Local Council leaders in the village structures.
"I won the Lamwo County parliamentary seat because of the strong support I received from the lower local leaders in the villages.

Nyeko said the LC I leaders are expected to support government programmes that benefit local people in their villages, adding that the Opposition would only frustrate such programmes.
"We do not want anybody to frustrate government programmes. Our people need support through programmes such as PDM, Emyooga and the GROW Project, among others, so that these initiatives can help fight household poverty," Nyeko said.
"Small mistakes are what divide the NRM in Acholi. Members should desist from such behaviour for the party to grow stronger in the region because when we are divided, we cannot move forward as one team," he said.
Ottober applauded the NRM Secretariat for what he described as good leadership, saying it has strengthened the government through leaders who are focused on development.
Sisto Oyet, the chairperson of Lamwo District, urged Todwong to resolve disputes among party leaders in the district so that harmony can prevail among NRM members and leaders can effectively serve the people.
He said the district executive committee cannot sit together with the district chairperson, a situation he said has made it difficult to promote service delivery to the communities that elected them.
Christopher Omara, the Resident District Commissioner, tasked leaders to support the government's fight against corruption so that citizens can fully benefit from government programmes.
Omara urged leaders to continue encouraging people to embrace the Parish Development Model (PDM) so that they can establish enterprises of their choice to fight household poverty.
"We must fight corruption together and continue sensitizing communities to embrace government programmes because if we eliminate corrupt leaders and civil servants, our people will be able to benefit," Omara said.
