"KAMPALA - The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has asked party members interested in the positions of Speaker and Deputy Speaker to apply.
According to the party deputy secretary general, Rose Namayanja, the NRM Central Executive Committee will on Sunday morning sieve applications and recommend preferred candidates to the NRM caucus in the afternoon.
The development comes at a time when the NRM Secretary General, Richard Todwong, has summoned the party parliamentary caucus for the 1st sitting of the 12th parliament.
In a letter dated May 20, 2026, addressed to the NRM Members of Parliament (MPs) and NRM-leaning independents, Todwong said the first meeting is scheduled to take place on Sunday (May 24, 2026) at State House, Entebbe.
“Notice is hereby given for the 1st meeting of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, which has been scheduled to take place on Sunday, 24th May, 2026 at State House, Entebbe and starting at 2:00pm,” Todwong.
The letter was also copied to NRM chairperson President Yoweri Museveni, outgoing Vice President Jessica Alupo, outgoing Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, and the office of the NRM Chief Whip.
Todwong noted that all NRM members are required to undergo a mandatory Covid-19 test at the Parliamentary Conference Hall on Friday and Saturday between 9:00am and 5:00pm.
Todwong said all independent MPs, who expressed interest to cooperate with the NRM party, are also invited to attend.
The party secretary general took the opportunity to congratulate the NRM MPs upon their swearing in as members of the 12th Parliament of Uganda, and added that the secretariat looks forward to working closely with each of them to protect the gains as the country makes a qualitative leap towards a higher middle-income status.
This comes at a time when the outgoing speaker, Anita Among, has withdrawn from the race.
